Connecting 2 computers off of 1 modem with an ethernet splitter?
I was wondering if they make a splitter box for ethernet cables? I am wanting to run 2 computers directly from my satelite internet modem. What I was wanting to do is have ethernet coming from the modem into a splitter, and then 2 separate ethernet cables going to each computer. Is that possible? Do they make this. I know a router would work, but do they just make a splitter? Thanks to any answers.Ok, So they are called ethernet switches, or hubs. I have a netgear wireless g router right now, and it is junk. I was just gonne be a ethernet switch, and some cat6 ethernet cable, and run it like that. Will I notice any difference in speed with a switch compared to a router? Also so how I would install this is run a short ethernet cable from modem to the switch, and then 2 separate ethernet cables going to each computer I want to connect? Give me any advice and tips on the please. Thanks for all the help.sorry typo. I was just gonna get an ethernet switch, and some cat6 ethernet cable.

Ethernet splitter problems?
I bought a pair of ethernet splitters to use to enable me to connect my laptop and Xbox with only one ethernet socket in my bedroom. I have a router downstairs, and I have used two of those ports to connect to the splitter, which then connects to a cable running through the wall. The other splitter is connected to the socket in my room, which I use to connect the two ethernet cables for my devices. However, only one of the ports on the bedroom splitter works are there any common problems which can be fixed easily to make it work? It is not a faulty splitter, as both ports work, but not at the same time. The cables in the wall were fitted fairly recently, so I can assume they are Cat 5e.ThanksThanks for the answers so far if there is no fix, I would be interested to know why it doesn't work in my case?In response to JeR, wouldn't the fact that I also have a splitter at the router end, which connects two ports to one wire, solve the IP address problem?
Which one is better, an Ethernet Splitter or an Ethernet Switch?
I want to connect my Xbox to my cable modem which sadly only has one Ethernet connection jutting out of it. I dont want to get a new modem cause there is an activation fee that goes with it and its really too much of a hassle. Ethernet swith seem to have too many connections for my purposes, a splitter seems to be the way to go but I am still not sure how bot of them would work? Which one is best to use so that I can have a permanent intermet connection to my xbox without slowing down the internet in the computer?. Are there any specific brands I should be looking into? I am looking for great quality and accesibility price range wise . Any help would be appreciated. Thank you D
